Lesson Botswana adopted age as their primary determinant for COVID-19 vaccine prioritisation.
Date 26th August, 2021
Country Botswana
Category Success
Theme Vaccine regulation and registration
Impact There is overwhelming evidence from peer-reviewed scientific publications that the risk of severe illness from COVID-19 increases with age. In Botswana, adults aged 55 years and older were prioritised to receive COVID-19 vaccines. This had an impact of reducing their COVID-19 hospitalisations and mortality, while giving hope of reopening their economy.
Recommendation The World Health Organisation (WHO) Scientific Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on vaccines has published recommendations on COVID-19 vaccines prioritisation, and older age being one of the areas of prioritisation. Countries are encouraged to read these recommendations and adapt according to their settings in terms of their epidemiological, clinical, social and behavioural states.
