Lesson Benin experienced delays in securing donor funding to procure COVID-19 vaccines
Date 16th July, 2021
Country Benin
Category Problem
Theme Vaccine allocation and financing
Impact In Benin, Extended Programme on Immunisation (EPI) office did not have information related to securing funding for COVID-19 vaccines through organisations like the World Bank, other than the COVAX facility. This implied that there were initial delays in acquisition of COVID-19 vaccines in the country and a missed opportunity for control of SARS-CoV-2 transmission.
Recommendation The COVAX facility that facilitates vaccine acquisition and delivery for poor countries is undoubtly a success. However, there are sometimes delays in acquiring vaccines through this facility owing to intermitent donations. It is, therefore, important each country knows and understands additional funding options to keep the stock of vaccines available. It is imperative each country's EPI office collaborates with Finance Ministry to discuss alternative vaccines sources to sustain country's COVID-19 vaccines.
